Small Steps

I’m slowly getting settled in. Yesterday was intentionally a slow day; some errands, some Japanese practice, some research. Perhaps more than I intended actually, but I was feeling anxious. I’m excited to be here, but at the same time, I really do wonder and worry about the pragmatics. Especially once I discovered that, in all likelihood, one of the major English language schools in Japan (Nova) will be going out of business. It’s just rumors at this point, but the rumors sound pretty convincing. If you’re curious, you can read about it here.

If they do close shop, then that means there will be a huge number of English language teachers suddenly looking for work. Somewhat worrying given that this is what I was planning to do till I could find something more substantive.

Ah well… small steps, small steps. After all, isn’t it the Tao Te Ching that says “A journey of a 1000 miles begins with frequent flyer miles.” šŸ™‚

Or perhaps more seriously:

Confront the difficult
while it is still easy;
accomplish the great task
by a series of small acts.
– Chapter 63, Tao Te Ching, translation by S. Mitchell
