Pitch Black

I was so sick of working on my dissertation yesterday, I decided to take a break. I didn’t feel like dealing with the city either, so I went to one of the local DVD/CD places and picked up a couple of movies. They’re all pirated (US$2 each) so the quality was not great, but they got the job done. A day in the dark of my room, full of mindless entertainment… woohoo!

Speaking of which, I really like Pitch Black. It’s a great example of a good science-fiction action/thriller. A varied set of characters with different motivations and story arcs, interesting aliens, good writing and action. Yes, it’s definitely a nice example of a well-made film.

Unfortunately, the sequel, the Chronicles of Riddick, was not as good. More ambitious certainly, but also less cohesive and the quality of character storytellng not as good. One interesting thing… did anyone else notice at the end how much Riddick looks like Conan on the throne?

If you’d like to try something different, check out Taxi, a french film that came out in 1998 about a hot-rodding taxi driver. It’s light and amusing and I totally want his car. *grin*
